I Am Grateful for My Family

Written by Sierra Bullets Ballistic Technician Robert Treece

The time frame around these two biggest holidays causes thoughts as the new year arrives—taxes, age, health and the big ones: FAMILY (being the cake) and FRIENDS (the icing).

I was an only child until almost a teenager with a strict dad (finish carpenter) and loving mom (yes, a homemaker). We had food to eat and clean clothes to wear. Chores were assigned from an early age; edge-of-town country boy stuff—garden weeding, hand- pumping wash water (laundry), wood for heat, and yeah some inside stuff too. Learned really early to never say I was bored; either parent could always solve that problem quickly.  School work was also checked!

When little sis arrived, I was handed the diaper bag to carry—“Is everything in there boy?” She gave me another responsibility as I grew up.

After high school was completed, I left for more schooling in Missouri.  I became a lot more independent, but sure missed the home cooking. A medical situation at home cost my draft deferment and guess what, I won the draft lottery! During my “walkabout” in Vietnam; sure thought of family and friends that wrote and sent prayers.

I’m on this earth because of my parents—they’ve loved, counseled and supported me to be who I am. With all that’s happening in this world; makes me think I’m one of the luckiest guys—having the family and friends I have.

My wish is for peace around the world—stay safe and good shooting!

You are not alone, I had been blessed with very good parents and family.
Mom and Dad are both gone now, it just my 2 sisters and all of our kids. I just hope they feel the same way I felt about my folks, and that I’ve done a good job with them. They are all out on thier own now and doing well.
    Thank you for sharing,
    Rupe
